Northrop
F-5

Flown for the first time in May 1963, the F-5 entered service the following year with a USAF training squadron. A dozen of the first F-5As were sent to Vietnam in 1965, where they proved able to match the USAF's frontline fighters in some missions.

They served with South Vietnam throughout the 10-year war with the North. Air forces in Europe, the Middle East, South America, and South East Asia, acquired Freedom Fighters before production switched to the uprated Northrop F-5E Tiger II.
